Pangea existed during the late Paleozoic and early Mesozioc eras. It had formed 300 million years ago. Pangea began to rift about 200 million years ago before separating to the way they look today. Pangea means " Entire Earth". Alfred Wegener coined the name. Pangea was the movement of the plate tectonics which had formed the way Earth looks today.
Pangaea means "Pan" meaning entire and "Gaia" meaning earth. Pangaea was all the continents combined before the plate tectonics tore them apart. After Pangaea, Africa and S. America were combined until a major earthquake split them apart. Afred Wegner came up with the theory of pangaea. Pangaea existed during the Paleozoic era and the Mesozoic era.
To really learn what was behind the breakup of Pangaea, scientist's said that they would need to take a yellow submarine all the way to the ocean floor.
From the 1950s to the 1970s, scientists made discoveries about the ocean's crust. The magnetic properties of rocks are classified either as normal, they have the same polarity as the current magnetic field, or as reversed, meaning the polarity is opposite the Earth's magnetic field. This state of polarity becomes locked in when the rock is formed. As scientists looked at the patterns of magnetic rock, the layers didn't quite align the way that they were supposed to, suggesting that the magnetized rock and the continents had moved.
Pangaea is known to be the one large continent that existed before they separated in to seven different continents. Scientist believe that plate tectonics is what caused the continent to separate. Pangaea existed during the late Paleozoic Era and early Mesozoic Era. The Pangaea Theory was made by Alfred Wegner. This happened in 1910. He later made a theory on how they locked in the positions they did.
Pangaea was a large continent combined of all the continents on Earth. Pangaea broke up through movement of the plates underneath. This did not bring the continents to their current locations though. The continents went through many different transformations to get to their current locations.

ReplyDeletePangea is what the continent was before there were separate continents.
